ESCONDIDO, CALIFORNIA - I LOVE GOLDEN POPPIES! I FREAKING LOVE THEM! You can only imagine my excitement when the weather blesses Southern California with a superbloom. My love for them bloomed when I saw, with my own eyes, the massive fields of Golden Poppies at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Preserve in the Antelope Valley. It was like paradise, walking in the middle of the orange field. A sense of peace and beauty that I had never experienced before in my life.
Ever since that spring, I have been clinically obsessed with doing a photoshoot in a field of them. Unfortunately, like Captain Ahab, such a project has been so elusive due to the delicate conditions required for a successful bloom. Year after year, the conditions were not met, and the result would be a partial bloom. We would travel for hours, only to be disappointed.
This year, I decided to be smarter and search for a wild field in my own backyard. Every time I traveled around San Diego County, my eyes were peeled for such a field. For weeks, I tried to find it, and nothing! One day, as I was driving by Lake Hodges in Escondido, I saw an orange patch on the hills across the lake. Could it be? I proceeded to drive around the lake, and to my surprise, EUREKA!!! I found a small field of Golden Poppies!
With the discovery of the field, I embarked on a passion project. My wife's niece volunteered to be our model for this shoot. The session turned out to be one of my favorite shoots of the year.
