LA JOLLA CALIFORNIA - Being trusted with one important moment in somebody's life is an honor.

Being trusted with four?

I honestly don't know what word covers that.

We've photographed Jackie and Louie through their engagement, their wedding, their first pregnancy, and now another baby on the way.

At some point, you stop feeling like the photographer who was hired for a session.

You start realizing you've been watching a family happen.

On February 21, 2025, we met them again—this time along the rocky coastline of La Jolla.

Different chapter.

Different landscape.

Same two people.

Only now, there were more of them.

When we first met Jackie and Louie, they were preparing for marriage.

Then came the wedding.

Then came their first maternity session at Lake Hodges.

Now here they were again, already parents, waiting for their family to grow one more time.

Their first maternity session preserved the moment before they became parents. This one felt different.

There was already a child between them now.

Already routines.

Already memories.

Already the experience of waking up every day responsible for another human being.

And I think there's something about having a child together that binds two people in a way nothing else quite can.

Jackie and Louie were close before.

They felt even tighter now.

You could see it without asking them to prove it.

This was still very much Jackie's maternity session.

Louie mattered.

Their son mattered.

I wanted them in the photographs.

But almost like cameos.

They're part of the welcoming party.

The people already standing on this side of the world waiting for somebody new to arrive.

The center remains the mother and the child she is carrying.

When I photographed Jackie this time, I saw something different in her.

Not a different woman.

A fuller version of the same woman.

She's beautiful.

That was already there.

But now there was something peaceful and maternal about her that hadn't existed in quite the same way before she became a mom.

Motherhood hadn't replaced who she was.

It had added to her.

That's what I wanted the photographs to carry.

The beauty of the woman.

The calm of the mother.

And the presence of a child none of us had met yet.

Jackie and Louie wanted a change of scenery.

We had already made several chapters together, and repeating the same environment didn't make much sense.

So we went toward the coast.

I should probably admit something here.

I'm not automatically impressed by a beach.

Sand.

Water.

Horizon.

Okay.

Now what?

A lot of coastline gives you very little to work with photographically.

That's one reason I love the beaches around San Diego County and parts of South Orange County.

The coast starts doing things.

Cliffs.

Rock shelves.

Sandstone.

Uneven terrain.

Dark crevices.

Shape.

Texture.

Character.

La Jolla gave us all of that.

And that matters because the background isn't just the stuff behind the person.

It's part of the photograph.

The wardrobe matters.

The expression matters.

The foreground matters.

The light matters.

The landscape matters.

All of those things are telling the story at the same time.

Jackie in a soft dress against hard stone feels different from Jackie standing against an empty horizon.

Neither is automatically right or wrong.

But they say different things.

Here, the rugged coastline gave the photographs weight.

Jackie brought the softness.

That tension made the setting work.

Maternity photography shouldn't only document the size of someone's belly.

There's something much larger happening.

A human being is growing inside another human being.

We understand the biology.

We know how pregnancy works.

And somehow that doesn't make it any less incredible.

There is already love for somebody nobody has met.

Parents wonder what they will look like.

What their personality will be.

What they'll love.

What they'll become.

An older sibling is waiting for someone who will eventually become part of their everyday life.

The entire family is looking toward a future they can imagine but cannot see yet.

That's what I want maternity photographs to feel like.

Connection.

Beauty.

Love.

Wonder.

And something majestic enough to acknowledge what is actually happening.

Because it is majestic.

We sent Jackie and Louie previews later that same day.

They loved them.

They couldn't wait to see the rest.

I love that reaction even more from returning clients.

They already know us.

They've already seen what we do.

And another chapter still feels exciting.

Eventually, though, the waiting ends.

The baby arrives.

The mystery gets a face.

A personality starts appearing.

The family adjusts.

Life becomes busy again.

And that brief stretch of time where everyone was wondering what the future would look like disappears.

That's what I hope Jackie and Louie remember when they see these photographs years from now.

Not only what Jackie looked like.

I want them to remember the anticipation.

The wonder.

The way their family already felt full of love while still knowing somebody was missing.

For one afternoon in La Jolla, the future was still unknown.

And they were standing there waiting for it together.

Every maternity session carries the same miracle, but the story surrounding it is never exactly the same.
